What to Look for When Hiring an Estate Planning Attorney
Picking an estate planning lawyer is an important process to ensuring that your assets are distributed as you want them to be after you pass away. There are a few important traits to look for in an estate planning attorney before you hire one. This video explains some of the most important things to look out for.
The first and most obvious thing to look for is a specialty in estate planning. Lawyers have different specialties, just like doctors. If you broke your leg, you wouldn’t go and see a hand surgeon. Similarly, you don’t want to use a criminal defense attorney when you’re trying to plan your estate.
The next thing to look for is the attorney’s experience. You may want to check out their educational background, but the truth is most of what an attorney learns is on the job, especially with estate planning. Find someone who works in your area and has practiced there for a while.
It’s important to remember that the older and more experienced an attorney does not necessarily mean that they are the best fit for you. Another factor to consider is cost. Make sure to take advantage of the free initial consultation offered by attorneys to get a sense of what they might charge. You can also assess them on a personal level in the meeting.
